Vintage ('56?) Gretsch (G)6120 Western / Chet Atkins / Hollywood

Beautiful vintage Gretsch (G)6120 in excellent++ condition. With OHSC and matching vintage strap. As the label is missing, and this (G)6120's exact building year cannot be determined from its individual components (see beyond for more details), it is probably an 6120 that was sent back to the Gretsch factory for repair after suffering structural damage. In cases like that, Gretsch used to replace components with whatever components were readily available at the moment, and then removed the original label when the repaired instrument turned out substantially different from the original.

This 6120 has the G-brand and the headstock from a '56 6120. The G-brand is clearly branded  into the wood, and looks exactly like the many G-brands on the '56 6120's that I owned over time (deep, rough shape and bottom, relatively wide, and with the stripe directly against the circle (in contradiction to the small, smooth, mechanically made G-brands of modern 6120's that have a small vertical 'bridge' between the circle and the stripe). Also the Bigsby B6 tremolo and the vintage rollbar bridge top seems to be very old. However, the fretboard may be from a '57/'58 6120, or from a later Gretsch. The pickguard is a - period correct - replacement.  The binding was probably also replaced; it looks different than the original binding. The DeArmond Dynasonic pickups are consistent with the early 6120's, many newer 6120's have Filtertron pickups.

All in all this is a wonderful vintage player's 6120, and it is priced accordingly (a labeled and all original '56 6120 will set you back 25K...).   Plays and sounds wonderful.
